Perry calls it quits

CHARLESTON | January 19, 2012

The Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, is expected to announce the suspension of his candidacy Thursday, two days before the South Carolina primary where he trails a distant fifth behind the other GOP candidates. A press conference in North Charleston will be held by Perry at 11 a.m. EST where he’ll make the announcement.

After a weak finish in Iowa’s caucuses, Perry almost end his candidacy then, but was urged on by his wife and his supporters. However, current polling indicates a similar finish for Perry in South Carolina indicating little hope for the Texas Governor in his presidential aspirations. Apparently, stumbling performances in early debates proved too much to overcome.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, “with Perry out of the race, his support, though only in the mid-single digits, could prove helpful to Newt Gingrich, who has been surging in recent opinion surveys.”

Jon Huntsman Senior Campaign Official tells CNN Huntsman Will Drop Out of Race

CNN reports that a senior official on the Jon Huntsman campaign told CNN that Huntsman will drop out of the presidential race tomorrow. This announcement comes after South Carolina’s largest newspaper, The State, endorsed him just six days before the Republican presidential primary. The State cited Huntsman’s job-creating tenure as Utah’s former governor as well as his foreign policy experience and his strong appeal to centrists as the reasons for their endorsement.

Huntsman also received another big newspaper endorsement from The Boston Globe in Massachusetts, a largely Democratic state, just days before the New Hampshire Republican primary.

Endorsements aside, Huntsman has been near the bottom in the national polls and came in a distant third behind Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Sarah Palin Believes She Can Win The 2012 Presidential Election

U.S. News and World Report  covers an ABC News interview of Sarah Palin which aired on Wednesday.  During the interview, Sarah Palin states that she is considering a presidential run in the 2012 election. Barbara Walters, the host of the interview, asked Sarah Palin if she could beat Barack Obama and win the election.  Sarah Palin replies matter-of-factly: “I believe so.”

The results of an Associated Press GfK poll, however, tell a different tale.  The poll results indicate that Sarah Palin is viewed favorably by only 46% while 49% view her unfavorably.  Interestingly, of those that considered themselves Republican or independents who lean toward the GOP, 79% had a favorable view of her.
