Roscosmos Phobos-Grunt Spacecraft Stranded in Low Earth Orbit

After an engine failure of the Phobos-Grunt, a 15-ton spacecraft that would have been en route to the Martian moon Phobos to collect soil samples had it not been for the failure, the Phobos-Grunt is now stranded in a very fast and low orbit around Earth. Russia is trying everything they can to regain control of the Phobos-Grunt in an attempt to fire its engines to leave for Mars and break out of the fast and low orbit around Earth.

However, should the attempt produce an unfavorable outcome, Russian scientists have discussed reentry scenarios. Should the Phobos-Grunt reenter Earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft will be the third and largest satellite to re-enter the atmosphere this year.
